Beautiful spring weather has us ready to spend some time outside perfecting the lawn. But some things are better left to the professionals. If you're looking to hire someone to take care of your exterior, you need to know what you're looking for. We've all heard nightmare stories from friends and family who have made the wrong choice when it comes to a provider.
Thankfully, Jason Hargraves of Angie's List offers seven great questions to ask your potential landscapers before bringing someone on.
1. Are you bonded and fully insured?
Landscapers will be operating machinery and moving heavy trees and plants around your property. Ensuring that they are professionals with insurance and not hobbyists or amateurs is important, especially when it comes to your own liability.
2. How long have you been in business?
You want to be sure that your landscaper has enough experience to handle your project, along with any unexpected issues.
3. Do you have industry specialists on staff?
Many companies will can handle basic landscaping jobs, but you'll want specialists for trees, knowing what plants will work best in your region and climate, etc.
4. Will you stay on my project until completion?
"Don't assume you are the company's only customer," Hargraves advises. Make sure that you and your landscaper are on the same page as far as scheduling and commitments are concerned.
5. Can you provide a drawing of your plans?
Know what you're getting ahead of time by asking for a drawing so you can understand what your landscaper is proposing. You may also want to see examples of their other work, especially if its similar to what you're asking for.
6. What’s your guarantee?
Always ask about a guarantee! Hargraves writes, that "reputable landscaping contractors should be willing to guarantee their work for at least two years, preferably five."
7. What installation process will be used?
Simply enough, how are they going to build and complete your product? What can you expect?
