Outdoor Decorations: Should I Hire a Pro?

December 9, 2016

Are your decorations up yet? Whether you've got a steep rooftop or want to avoid the chill, you may be thinking of hiring a professional to take care of the lights. Here's what you need to consider.

Safety

  • A key item to consider when deciding whether or not to hire a professional is your own safety.

  • The safety of the people you hire is important, too. Make sure that whichever company you choose is insured.

  • This time of year, you'll see signs popping up all over town for light installation. Remember that the person, or company, you hire will be working on your home and near your family. Check with Angie's List or the Better Business Bureau for reviews and reputation.

Hiring A Professional

  • Professional lighting services are typically landscaping services looking for some extra work during the winter months. While this shouldn't be a deterrent by any means, you should be sure that you know what you want.

  • The company you use should install and remove the lights. They may require you to purchase the lights they offer and may not guarantee the work using lights that you already own.

  • When looking for someone to hire, ask around in the neighborhood and on social media, or even consult a service like Angie's List to make sure you're getting good help.

Payment

  • You should not be expected to pay in full up front. A typical charge is 75% down for installation with the balance being paid upon removal.

  • Fees vary but an elaborate display can cost as much as $1500 for a first visit (including the purchase of lights) with a discount for loyal customers.
