Who Needs Sleep?

You do – and here’s how to get more of it in your home!

We spend so much of our lives in the bedroom, but it’s an often-neglected space when it comes to thoughtful home decor. But the fact of the matter is that the way your bedroom is decorated can have impact the way you sleep. Below, we have 5 ways you can improve your bedroom for a better night’s sleep. Sweet dreams!

Lighting

Proper lighting is crucial to your sleeping habits. If your bedroom has lots of bright lighting, it can confuse your brain at bedtime, when it should be dim. One improvement you can make is to adjust your lighting away from bright, overhead bulbs, and white light. Instead, use secondary lighting sources, like lamps or recessed fixtures with yellow tones.

Color

If warm, calm wall colors are the last thing you see at night, and the first thing you see in the morning, you’ll feel better-rested. Soft shades of yellow, peach, blue and green are perfect choices, but not every mind will see the same colors as soothing. Choose a color that gives you a sense of soothing calm.

Clutter

Keeping your bedroom in good order will help you get rid of stress at the end of the day. Sherrie Bourg Carter Psy.D. says that “Clutter bombards our minds with excessive stimuli (visual, olfactory, tactile), causing our senses to work overtime on stimuli that aren’t necessary or important.” Take a few minutes before you head to bed to tidy up any mess your bedroom may have seen during the day.

Television

So many of us are in the habit of watching television before or as we fall asleep. But, as we noted above, too much light, especially light from electronics can keep you awake longer. Electronics can also be a distraction, when your bedroom should be a peaceful sanctuary. Also worth noting is the blue light that electronics and charging devices give off – these are the worst kind of light for sleeping. Consider a bedroom electronics ban if you’re serious about catching Zs.
